I throw minis “off the hump” and also using a mini wheel. The technique of using a mini wheel can often be counter-intuitive to the way we throw on a full-sized wheel. When I demonstrate how I use the mini wheel, I share these tips:

1. Use very soft clay.
2. Keep water to a minimum.
3. Avoid clay with grog.
4. Keep up your speed.
5. Use pressure on the exterior to push the clay up and a gentle pulling pressure from the interior to widen.
6. Use tools to shape and add texture.

Making handles and trimming are very similar for miniatures but, frankly, much more difficult!
