We’re kinda nuts, either way

Some of you have asked about our Hickory Collection. The glazes are Mayco’s Black Walnut and Green Tea. “Why didn’t you call it the Walnut Collection?” you ask. It comes down to this photo:

It was a chilly morning on a friend’s farm in Pennsylvania and I was wandering around shooting arty-farty set-ups with our pots. We had made a hickory nut pie for Thanksgiving (shelling these babies is hard labor) and I thought their forms were beautiful—inside and outside the shell. I grabbed a handful and tossed them on this plate, loved the outcome, and included it on the website. As we were testing the website, our friends were delighted I used some of their nuts but reminded me they were not walnuts. I hadn’t really thought of the “nut” connection and possible name conflict. Easy fix! We decided to call the combo the Hickory Collection.

We promise we aren’t trying to be pretentious. We use these nicknames to help us communicate to each other as we are creating a piece. Believe me, we’ve had our share of misunderstandings when we’ve simply agreed on “the green glaze.”

We are developing a red glaze (stay tuned). I think we’ll be having some fun with that collection and naming opportunities. Terry has already vetoed the “Bloody Mary” Collection but I have more ideas!
