You know how you can get a tune stuck in your head and you’ll go around humming it for days. Pottery is a bit like that. I will have an idea that obsesses me as I try out various sketch and prototype forms. We tend to do a lot of research and even when we are not actively creating, we are researching, exploring, talking about it over coffee.
Match Crocks have been one of those projects. The actual throwing of the forms is not a big deal but math was involved to get the proportions just right. We contemplated square forms and closed forms but settled on this open cylinder that by its construction has a “lid” function.
We experimented with glazes, knowing we wanted the chattered exterior to peak through and that the bottom of the match holder would remain unglazed. The Green Tea glaze by Mayco is our favorite on the Speckled Brown Trout Rocky Mountain clay. The old codger had this sweet idea of how to demonstrate the match crock function. We are so grateful for the fun demo (as well as the priceless outtakes, which we can’t publish, lol.)
